Dear reader,

I think that we might sometimes forget what an amazing privilege it is to be able to study in the way that we do. First getting a broad understanding of all of the fields of Biology and then having the complete freedom over the courses that you follow after that.

The summer break is always a perfect time to look back at the past year and evaluate. Perhaps you’ve had a change of heart and want to revise your curriculum. Or perhaps you’ve decided to take a fourth bachelor year because you also want to have time for your own personal development in different areas than studying. For that there are of course more than enough possibilities: you can become a teaching assistant for the new first year’s that will start in September, perhaps you want to invest in something more social and join a committee of BeeVee or maybe a board year is something that might fit you really well! Lots and lots of possibilities and each one just as valid as the next. So for the summer break: take the time to think about your own possibilities and make sure to take the freedom that you have to start again fresh and full of energy next year in September!

Book order period
The book order period for the first quarter of next year starts today and will last until Wednesday the 12^th of July. If you haven’t done so already, be sure to order the books you’ll need via the BeeVee website! For more info, you can check your student email and if you have any questions, you can send them to beevee_ces@science.ru.nl.

After exam activity
On Friday the 30^th of June the board will organize a small after exam activity From 14:00 till 17:00 you can join us in the North Canteen for a drink, some snacks and some games. After that the year of activities will be officially over and we will see you again in September after the summer break!

Participating in a neuroimaging experiment

It is a multi-session study investigating how people learn. Participants will be asked to find the regularities of a sequence of colorful objects presented on a screen. We will record pupil size by using  non-invasive EYELINK and brain activity using fMRI or MEG while participants perform the task.

The total duration of the study is around 15.5+ hours, divided over maximally a month. Participants will visit the Donders Institute 11+ times, depending on their learning speed. At the end of their participation, they will be compensated with 200+ euros, which will be transferred to their bank account.

Please note that the following eligibility requirements must be met: right-handedness, normal or corrected to normal vision, normal hearing, at least 16 years old but under 40 years old, no claustrophobia, no pregnancy, and no metal in their body.

Summer courses: free Social Dutch and more

Fancy expanding your language skills this summer? You can do just that with In’to Languages’ summer courses. Don’t worry - you won’t have to spend the whole summer holiday studying. The courses are short and effective, so you can learn a lot and enjoy your holiday too.

What to choose from?
- One or two-week Social Dutch summer courses (free for all RU international students): the main goal is learning to communicate in Dutch in everyday situations.
- Spanish or Italian summer courses for beginners: learn the basics in just one week.
- Boost Camps ‘Pronunciation in English’ and ‘Emailing in English’: work on one skill and make big progress in just one day.

Radboud University students receive a 50% discount on the Spanish and Italian summer courses and the English Boost Camps. Please note that the number of places in each course is limited, so if you want to join, you’ll have to be quick!

Looking for student assistants first year Q1 courses

 We are looking for student assistants to assist the first quarter of the freshman year Biology in 2022.  
This involves a combination of the following three courses: 

1) Introduction to the Bachelor programme 
2) Evolution and development of plants 
3) Animal evolution and adaptation  

  From September 4th onwards, these courses together will last 7 weeks in total. Assume that you can work the entire working day during that period on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. These courses have a lot of lab classes and you also need some time for preparation.

What does a robot chemist look like? Well… like a robot. In our last episode of the season, we are joined by Andy Cooper, Professor of the University of Liverpool, to discuss how building intelligent robots can lead to materials discovery! Professor Cooper’s team has brought to life every chemist’s dream: a tireless, precise, and resilient lab partner! He will join us online and you can ask all your interesting questings during the discussion section directly.

The lab’s research focuses on synthesizing materials with novel functions, and on developing methods for controlling material structure at the atomic level. By utilizing the mobile robot chemist to carry out experiments, the discovery of materials can be greatly accelerated. Don’t worry though, the robot’s purpose is to augment scientist’s ability to do research, not to replace them (yet). Don’t miss our final episode of the season!
